Ottawa County Parks Department: Preserving Nature One Grass at a Time

The Ottawa County Parks Department recently organized a Park Stewards workday, where staff and volunteers came together to help preserve the local beaches. This effort involved moving marram grass from stable dunes to areas affected by erosion, a critical task in maintaining the health and beauty of the dunes.

Why Marram Grass? Marram grass is essential for dune stabilization. Its deep roots help hold the sand in place, preventing erosion and protecting the dunes from wind and water damage. By transplanting this grass to eroded areas, the Parks Department is actively working to restore and maintain the natural landscape.

Community Involvement The workday saw a fantastic turnout of community members who are passionate about preserving their local environment. Volunteers of all ages participated, demonstrating the community’s dedication to environmental stewardship. The event not only contributed to the preservation efforts but also fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Future Plans The Parks Department plans to continue such initiatives, with more workdays and educational programs aimed at involving the community in conservation efforts. They are also looking into more sustainable practices and innovative solutions to combat erosion and other environmental challenges.
